Indian Premier League (IPL)- How it all started?
For Indians, cricket has always been like a religion. It has been taken as more than just a game. While cricket has several formats, the Twenty-20 format created a history in Indian cricket. This format became phenomenally popular after India won the Twenty-20 World Cup in 2007 and Indian Premier League (IPL) has been cashing on the craze of Indian Cricket enthusiasts since then.
It was all started and ideated by the BCCI Vice-President Lalit Modi and it was on the way to come to the forefront in 2008. Since then, IPL changed the way cricket has played in India. The IPL works on a franchise system based on the American style of hiring players and transfers. Initially, these franchises were put for auction, where the highest bidder won the rights to own the team, representing each city.
Of the 11 teams to have completed since its inception, five teams won the title:
- Chennai Super Kings (2 times)
- Kolkata Knight Riders (2 times)
- Mumbai Indians (1 time)
- Rajasthan Royals (1 time)
- Deccan Charges (1 time)
The IPL is watched worldwide and it made a history in 2010, by becoming the first sporting event to be broadcast live on YouTube.
