Saina Nehwal: The First Indian Woman to Secure No. 1 Position in Badminton
Saina Nehwal created history and became the first Indian woman to secure the no. 1 position in Badminton on Saturday. This comes after her closest competitor, Spain’s Carolina Marin, lost in the India Open Super Series semifinal.
This is the first time since 2010 that there is a non- Chinese world No. 1 in the women’s category. Officially, Saina will hold the coveted spot from April 3.
When asked about the ranking, Saina said, “No. 1 is not at the back of the mind right now and the only thing I am focusing on is playing all the tournaments and I want to win them.”
She further added, “It is tough to be in top five for the last seven years.I hope to maintain it for some time. I feel good and I want to be the best. It’s my personal choice, fight against the top players. I want to be one of the top players in the world.”
Before the tournament, Nehwal was ranked World No. 2 with 74,381 points after China’s Li Xuerui with 79,214 points. But the last year runner-up in Delhi, Xuerui has been battling injury and she did not even participated this year, which resulted in the drop of 7,800 points, decreasing her total to 71,414.
Undoubtedly, Nehwal would have surged ahead of Xuerui, even if she had pulled out herself. On Saturday, Spaniard Carolina Marin faltered as she lost 19-21, 23-21, 22-20 to Thailand’s IntanonRatchanok.
Though, Saina’s road ahead is not entirely smooth, for her consecutive performances will decide how long she stays at the top. We wish Saina all the best!!
